The Aleph Institute is warning non-U.S. citizens, including green card holders, that voting in an election can carry serious legal consequences, even if they are registered or receive a ballot in the mail.
by COLlive Editor · COLliveThe Aleph Institute has issued an important notice warning non-U.S. citizens against voting in elections, emphasizing that doing so can result in serious legal and immigration consequences.
The notice, titled “Not a U.S. Citizen? Do Not Vote,” stresses that individuals who are not American citizens are prohibited from voting in federal elections, regardless of their immigration status.
“Green card? Visa? Any status? NO,” the flyer states, emphasizing that the restriction applies even to individuals who are registered to vote or receive a ballot in the mail.
“Getting a ballot does NOT mean you are allowed to vote,” the notice warns.
The Aleph Institute also cautions that non-citizens have been arrested, held in ICE detention and placed in deportation proceedings for voting, including individuals who were unaware they were ineligible.
The organization urges anyone with questions about their immigration status or voting eligibility to consult an experienced immigration attorney.
In addition, the Aleph Institute is offering support and advocacy for individuals currently in ICE custody.
Those seeking assistance can contact the organization at 305-864-5553, ext. 215, or 917-770-1966.
The Aleph Institute notes that it is a nonprofit organization, not a law firm, and does not provide legal representation.
