NYPD traffic agents were seen throughout Crown Heights last night and again early Wednesday morning, issuing parking tickets to vehicles across the neighborhood.
The agents went block by block along the side streets, ticketing cars that were double-parked, parked too close to fire hydrants or in violation of posted parking regulations.
The enforcement comes as thousands of guests arrive in Crown Heights for the annual Kinus Hashluchim, bringing a sharp increase in traffic and parking demand. Rental cars, taxis and family vehicles have filled the neighborhood’s already crowded streets, making parking especially difficult for residents and visitors alike.
“It’s frustrating to wake up and find a ticket on your car, especially when parking is already so difficult around here,” said a Crown Heights resident who received a ticket Wednesday morning.
For visiting Shluchim, the situation has also added an unexpected expense to their trip.
“I flew in from Israel for the Kinus and didn’t expect my first expense in Crown Heights to be a parking ticket,” said Rabbi Schneir Cohen.
The increased police presence comes just days after Kinus organizers met with senior NYPD officials to review security arrangements and coordinate police coverage throughout Crown Heights for the busy week.
Drivers arriving for the Kinus are urged to pay close attention to parking signs, avoid double-parking and keep fire hydrants clear to avoid costly tickets during their stay.
