A video from Crown Heights today shows an electric scooter rider colliding with a pedestrian crossing at the intersection of Kingston Avenue and Union Street.

While the incident does not appear to have resulted in serious injuries, it comes amid growing concerns about the increasing use of electric scooters and e-bikes.

In a letter to parents, Rabbi Yaakov Bender of Yeshiva Darchei Torah in Far Rockaway, New York, warned of the dangers posed by these vehicles and urged parents to think carefully before allowing children to ride them.

The letter reads:

“I am at my wits’ end that there are still parents who allow their children to bring electric bikes and scooters to the Yeshiva.

Last week, two e-bikers were killed when they collided on the Queensboro Bridge, R”L.

Jewish children on scooters have been killed in other communities. Other children have been maimed.

This is pure negligence on the part of the parents.

I believe in making children happy, but allowing a child to ride an electric bike or scooter is akin to giving a gun to a child.

In my office, I now have a collection of electric bikes and scooters that were ridden to Yeshiva and then placed in backyards of homes down the street instead of being brought to campus. I want them under lock and key so that children do not attempt to retrieve them and continue riding.

I understand that every single child asks for these toys, but parents who give in are ignoring the consequences.”
