KUALA LUMPUR (Dec 19): Police have recorded the statement of activist and graphic designer Mohd Fahmi Reza Mohd Zarin in connection with an allegedly defamatory social media post said to have insulted the Johor Royal Institution.

Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation Department director Datuk M. Kumar said police also seized a mobile phone believed to have been used to upload the post as part of the investigation.

He said the case is being investigated under Section 4(1) of the Sedition Act 1948 for acts with a tendency to incite, and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 for the improper use of network facilities or services.

According to Kumar, police have so far received 284 reports nationwide in relation to the issue.

“Firm and uncompromising action will be taken against any individual who insults the Royal Institution in accordance with existing laws,” he said.

Previously, a Facebook post by Fahmi Reza, which allegedly touched on the Johor Royal Institution, went viral, prompting several state leaders, non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and Johor lawmakers to lodge police reports. – Bernama
