KUCHING (Feb 28): Balai Ringin assemblyman Datuk Snowdan Lawan has disbursed RM1.81 million in Minor Rural Project (MRP) funds to 98 beneficiaries in his constituency.

Snowdan, who is also the state Deputy Minister for Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts, said RM940,000 of the total allocation was channelled to 68 village development and security committees (JKKKs), village women bureaus, chapels, churches, clubs and associations.

“These funds are meant to fund the villages’ activities such as gotong-royong, students cash incentives, formal functions, craft and cultural events, sports and recreation or youth engagement activities,” he said in a statement on Saturday (Feb 28).

He added that RM710,000 was allocated to 15 villages for infrastructure upgrades, repair works and the construction of new storage facilities to safeguard village assets.

Another RM160,000 was distributed to 15 parent-teacher associations (PIBG) to finance annual programmes, including inter-school meets, educational visits, library book purchases and assistance for needy students.

He handed over these MRP cheques to the respective recipients at his service centre in Balai Ringin on Feb 23.

Meanwhile, he advised village headmen and their committees to exercise transparency and hold regular meetings before utilising the funds.

He stressed that local residents should be kept informed to ensure the allocations are used for their intended purposes.

In light of the current tuberculosis (TB) outbreak, Snowdan also reminded his constituents to remain vigilant and prioritise their health.
