KUCHING (Dec 19): A 31-year-old man was sentenced to eight years’ imprisonment by the Sessions Court here on Friday for causing grievous hurt to his father.

Judge Musli Ab Hamid imposed the sentence on Kyrie Edvinsen Ripay after he pleaded guilty to a charge under Section 326 of the Penal Code, which provides for a jail term of up to 20 years, and a fine or whipping, upon conviction.

The offence occurred at a house in Kampung Bijuray Mongag, Bau, at about 7.50am on July 9.

According to the facts of the case, the victim went outside his house after hearing a loud noise and found that Kyrie had punched the side of his car, causing damage.

When the victim gently reprimanded him, Kyrie became enraged and assaulted his father.

The attack resulted in injuries to the victim’s head and arm, as well as fractures to two of his toes.

After receiving treatment at the hospital, the victim lodged a police report, which led to Kyrie’s arrest later the same day.

It was revealed that the accused has a history of mental health issues, specifically schizophrenia.

However, based on his psychiatric report, he is considered fit to stand trial.

Deputy public prosecutor Asmawi Nur Haqim Mokhtar prosecuted the case, while the accused was unrepresented by counsel.
