KUCHING (March 17): Physical works on the Sarawak Stadium upgrading and refurbishment project are progressing well and are currently ahead of schedule, said the Public Works Department (JKR) Sarawak.

In a Facebook post, JKR Sarawak said the status of the project was revealed during a site visit by Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development Minister Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah on Monday to review its progress ahead of the 2027 SEA Games.

Abdul Karim, who is also Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts, was accompanied by Deputy State Secretary Datu Hii Chang Kee during the official visit.

According to JKR Sarawak, the visit aimed to assess the implementation progress of the project, which forms a key part of preparations for the regional multi-sport event.

Among the highlights presented were proposals for façade lighting to give the stadium a more iconic and modern appearance at night, as well as new colour schemes and seating configurations designed to enhance spectator comfort and refresh the stadium’s overall look.

The delegation also conducted a site inspection to observe ongoing construction works and ensure that quality standards are being adhered to.

“The visit reflects the continued commitment of the Sarawak government and relevant agencies to ensure the project is completed smoothly, meets quality expectations, and fulfils its strategic role as a key venue for future major sporting events,” said JKR Sarawak.

The Sarawak Stadium upgrade is part of a RM184.3 million project awarded earlier this year, with works commencing in January 2026 and targeted for completion by June 2027 ahead of the SEA Games opening ceremony scheduled for September that year.

Recent reports said the upgrading works include installation of a new roof truss system, replacement of all seating with foldable seats, façade and interior enhancements, as well as improved VIP and holding facilities to meet international standards.

However, the football pitch is not included in the current scope and will only be upgraded after the Games due to anticipated heavy usage during the opening ceremony and related events.

The stadium, which has a seating capacity of about 48,000, has been selected as the main venue for the SEA Games opening ceremony — marking the first time the event will be held in Sarawak.
