PUTATAN (Nov 19): A mother was killed while her son severed his leg when a train knocked them at a railway track at Kampung Petagas in Putatan on Tuesday.

Putatan Fire and Rescue Station chief Noor Sherriyana binti Bohari said the incident happened when 41-year-old Lena Gabin and her 11-year-old son were crossing the railway track around 1.55pm.

“Both mother and son were hit by the train that was on its way to Kota Kinabalu from Beaufort.

“The mother was killed instantly while the boy was taken to hospital for treatment,” she said, adding that his leg was severed and also sustained injuries to his hands and head.

Witnesses said the mother had tried to save her son by pushing him away before the train hit them.

The woman was believed to have just picked up her son from school and were walking home to Kampung Muhibbah, by passing the railway tracks, when the incident happened.

She was dragged some 20 metres from where she was hit while her son was found sitting up crying in pain some distance away.

Noor Sherriyana said fire and rescue personnel rushed to the location upon receiving a distress call at 1.58pm.

The woman’s body was handed to the police before the operation ended at 2.47pm.
