KUCHING (April 9): The old Kuching Nurses’ Quarters building is currently being converted into Anjung Kasih Juma’ani, which will provide 124 beds for Sarawak General Hospital (SGH) patients’ families once completed in June 2027.

According to a Facebook post by the Ministry of Health Malaysia (MOH), the project is part of the Sarawak government’s initiative to offer more comfortable and well-organised accommodation for families of patients receiving treatment at SGH.

MOH added that Deputy Health Minister Datuk Hanifah Hajar Taib recently visited the site to inspect the progress of the upgrading works, which began in February this year.

Also present during the visit were Deputy State Health Director (Public Health) Dr Mohammad Nazaruddin Bahari, MOH Deputy Secretary of the Development Division Ahmad Rizal Khalit, as well as officers from the State Health Department.

Work to convert the old Kuching Nurses’ Quarters started in February.

Meanwhile, Hanifah, in a statement following the site visit, described the project as an important effort to ease the burden of patients and their families, especially those from rural areas.

“It also reflects the government’s commitment to ensuring that quality healthcare services are accessible to all segments of society,” she said.

She added the initiative is spearheaded by the Ministry of Women, Family and Community Development (KPWKM) through its agency, the National Welfare Foundation (YKN).
