MIRI (Oct 27): Learning institutions must strive to provide a holistic education by means of academics lessons and structured co-curricular activities and school programmes, said state Transport Minister Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin.

In making this call, Lee, also the Senadin assemblyman, emphasised the importance of study-life balance as a student.

“Schools, as well as students, should not focus solely on academics and forget the significance of co-curricular activities. You must balance these two,” he said when officiating at SMK Baru’s Excellence Award ceremony yesterday.

He also advised the young audience to manage their time well, limit their smartphone usage, and avoid social media distraction while learning.

On the state’s free tertiary education initiative, set to begin in 2026, Lee advised the students to study hard in order for them to be able to be enrolled in Sarawak-owned higher learning institutions.

“Therefore, you (students) must study hard so that you can benefit from this programme,” he said, while congratulating the award recipients for their achievements, as well as the teachers for their dedication and commitment.

A total of 297 students from the school received excellence awards for their outstanding results in the 2023 SPM and STPM examinations.
