KUCHING (Nov 8): Police have arrested two men at the Miri Airport for alleged trafficking of over 21kg of various drugs on Wednesday.

Sarawak police commissioner Dato Mancha Ata in a statement today said the suspects aged between 36 and 42 were detained at the Miri Airport arrival hall during an operation by the Narcotics Criminal Investigation Department.

One of the suspects, he said, had four criminal records under Section 15(1) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, Section 379, 448, and 457 of the Penal Code.

“Further checks led to the discovery of over 21kg of drugs in their luggages, consisting of 10,830g of Eramin 5; 4,100g of ecstasy; and 7,000g of methamphetamine,” he said.

Mancha said the modus operandi involved acquiring a supply of drugs in the peninsula and bringing it back to Miri via the airport.

“The suspects also received a payment of RM5,000 (to smuggle the drugs),” he said, noting that the seized drugs were intended for the local market.

Initial screenings also found that both suspects were positive for methamphetamine, amphetamine and benzo drugs.

The case is investigated under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drug Act 1952 which provides for death sentence or life imprisonment with a minimum of 12 whippings upon conviction, Macha added.
