Sarawak firefighters hailed as courageous, disciplined ahead of monsoon
by Churchill Edward · Borneo Post OnlineKUCHING (Nov 27): Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian praised the courage, discipline and professionalism of Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) personnel during the launch of the Northeast Monsoon Preparedness Programme at Tabuan Jaya fire station.
Addressing officers and personnel, the State Minister of Public Health, Housing and Local Government highlighted the vital role of firefighters during the monsoon season, which brings unpredictable weather and sudden emergencies.
“I deeply value the dedication and hard work the department has put into preparations for the monsoon season.
“Firefighters are always among the first to arrive, ready to assist and protect the public. Your courage, discipline and unwavering commitment are qualities I greatly admire,” he said in a speech delivered by Kuching South mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng.
Dr Sim described the preparedness programme as a critical operational platform designed to ensure readiness at every level.
He commended Bomba for its proactive approach, which extends beyond technical training to include equipment readiness, logistics, communication systems, community engagement and mental preparedness.
“This demonstrates that Sarawak Bomba does not only respond when disaster strikes — it works proactively on prevention and risk reduction,” he said, reaffirming the state government’s full support through training, technology, upgraded equipment and infrastructure.
He also praised the department’s collaboration with local authorities, disaster management units, non-governmental organisations, industries and community organisations, describing it as a ‘progressive model of teamwork’.
“Careful planning, intensive training and strong commitment will enable Bomba to respond effectively, reduce risks and protect our people,” he said, reminding firefighters to prioritise their own safety.
Wee echoed Dr Sim’s sentiments, calling Bomba personnel ‘multitasking heroes’ who routinely risk their lives to protect the community.
He urged the public to show greater respect and practical support for the department, such as contributing to equipment upgrades and improving working conditions.
“Firefighters are the nearest to disaster sites, often facing hazardous conditions. Their teamwork, discipline and selflessness make a crucial difference during emergencies, and they deserve recognition and respect,” he said.
Bomba Sarawak director Jamri Masran was also present at the launch.
