KUCHING (Dec 18): A Community Walkabout and Dialogue held in Sekama here on Tuesday, underscored a meaningful collaborative effort between the Malaysia Crime Prevention Foundation (MCPF) Sarawak Chapter, the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) and the JKKK Sekama to strengthen community safety through direct engagement and dialogue.

The programme began with a dialogue session from 9am to 10am, providing residents with an opportunity to raise concerns and share feedback directly with enforcement agencies and community leaders.

This was followed by a community walkabout from 10.10am to noon, enabling participants to observe conditions on the ground and better understand issues highlighted during the discussion.

Among the key concerns raised by residents were the visibility and frequency of police patrols, the presence of homeless individuals, entertainment outlets operating beyond permitted hours, and drug-related activities in the area.

Participants also proposed the establishment of a WhatsApp communication group led by Sekama Police Station, with support from MCPF Sarawak and JKKK Sekama, to facilitate real-time information and coordination among stakeholders.

In response, PDRM outlined several ongoing and planned crime prevention initiatives, including the Volunteer Smartphone Patrol (VSP), the formation of neighbourhood watch groups, and the organisation of anti-crime awareness talks aimed at promoting preventive behaviour within the community.

The programme concluded on a positive note, reaffirming that effective crime prevention is built on trust, communication and shared responsibility.

The initiative strengthened cooperation among law enforcement, local authorities, community leaders and residents, reflecting Sekama’s commitment to building a safer and more resilient community.

Among those present were PDRM were Sekama Police Station chief ASP Simon Renang; head of the Crime Prevention & Community Safety Division DSP Jo Hang; MCPF representatives Tang Siang Luang and David Law; JKKK Sekama representatives Penghulu Tommy Thian and Kapitan Kho Phek Choo; and Kuching City South Council (MBKS) councillors Nicholas Wung and Joanne Jong Jia Chee.
