MIRI (March 31): Miri City Council (MCC) will set up a multi-departmental task force to ensure perimeter drains are properly maintained as part of efforts to address flash flood concerns and improve urban sanitation.

Mayor Adam Yii Siew Sang said the initiative comes in response to recurring flash floods since last year, largely attributed to heavy rainfall as well as clogged and poorly maintained drainage systems.

“Flooding can be caused by many factors, including heavy rainfall and the condition of drains and blockages.

“What we can do on the council’s part is to ensure that dirty drains are not one of the causes,” he told a press conference after chairing the council’s March full meeting on Monday.

He noted that MCC has already initiated an ongoing drain-cleaning campaign across the city to mitigate such risks, while the task force will focus specifically on maintaining the cleanliness of perimeter drains, particularly in commercial areas.

Yii said the council has received complaints from the public regarding clogged drains and foul odours, often linked to improper waste disposal practices.

He added that the task force will involve several departments, including engineering, public health and other relevant units, to ensure stricter compliance among food outlets and businesses, particularly in the installation and maintenance of grease traps.

“This will be a coordinated effort involving multiple departments.

“In the coming months, we will intensify enforcement and ensure that all premises comply with council regulations,” Yii added.

He also stressed that maintaining a clean and flood-resilient city is a shared responsibility, urging businesses and the public to play their part.

“These issues cannot be addressed by the council alone.

“All stakeholders must work together. At the same time, we will continue to enhance public awareness so that collectively we can maintain a clean and sustainable city,” Yii added.
