Nancy: Flexible WFH approach needed for civil servants
by Aliah Abdullah · Borneo Post OnlineKUCHING (April 4): A flexible approach to implementing the work-from-home (WFH) policy for civil servants is needed, taking into account the nature of different roles and personal circumstances, says Dato Sri Nancy Shukri.
The Minister of Women, Family and Community Development said the matter had been raised at Cabinet level following the recent announcement by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and a circular issued by the Public Service Department (JPA).
She noted that some parents are more accustomed to working from the office, especially as their commute coincides with sending children to childcare centres.
“As such, I suggested that heads of departments be given the discretion to determine suitability, as not all roles are appropriate for work-from-home arrangements,” she said after the Rangkaian Kasih NS Programme at Lundu District police headquarters on Friday.
She also highlighted public feedback that the policy appears to focus on civil servants based in state capitals, potentially excluding those working in other districts.
“This matter is still awaiting clarification from the Public Service Department.
“As I mentioned, I have raised this in Cabinet so that it can be reviewed in terms of necessity and suitability,” she added.
On a separate issue, she expressed support for the government’s move to restrict social media access for children under 16, noting that the policy had been discussed at Cabinet level prior to its approval.
“We support this measure as it aims to ensure children grow up in a safe environment.
“While today’s generation is more accustomed to social media, parents still play a crucial role in monitoring their children,” she said.
She emphasised that parental responsibility remains key, alongside regulatory measures and accountability of service providers.
“Every child has the right to grow up in a safe environment, with the freedom to explore and develop without unnecessary risks,” she added.
