KAPIT (Nov 6): The two-day ‘Carnival STEM’, organised by SK Kapit in collaboration with the Association of Wives of Ministers and Deputy Ministers of Sarawak (Sabati) and Petroleum Sarawak (Petros) as main sponsors, meant to expose pupils to Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) education and inculcate in them the interest in these subjects.

Speaking at the closing ceremony of the carnival on Monday, Deputy Minister in Sarawak’s Premier’s Department (Native Laws and Customs) Datuk Jefferson Jamit Unyat congratulated the organisers for the success of the carnival.

“Children at a young age must start to learn and have interest in STEM to explore science and technology further. I hope other schools in Kapit would take the initiative to organise and run similar programmes for the children.

“It is the hope of the government to see more than 50 per cent of students take up STEM studies,” said the Bukit Goram assemblyman.

He also called upon teachers to think ‘out of the box’ in making their teaching and learning interesting so as to attract their students’ interest in STEM.

Later at the event, Jamit announced government grants of RM10,000 for the parent-teacher association of SK Kapit, and RM22,500 for the school’s minor improvement projects.

Meanwhile in her speech, Jamit’s wife Datin Nancy Kuyor outlined the objectives of the programme: to inculcate the interest of students in rural areas in learning science from primary school level up to university education; to increase the number of students entering Science Stream, Technology and Vocational education at Form 4 level; to increase the number of students pursuing studies in science; technical and vocational studies at institutions of higher learning; to enhance knowledge of Science and Mathematics teachers in teaching and learning of techniques of answering questions; and to increase the percentage of passes in Science subjects.

Others present were Machan assemblyman Allen Siden Gramong, Kapit District officer Cerisologo Sabut, as well as SK Kapit senior assistants David Ajan (pupils’ welfare) and Jemat Benet (cu-curriculum).
