Awg Bemee leads M’sian parliamentary delegation at Commonwealth conference in Sydney

KUCHING (Nov 7): Senate President Datuk Awang Bemee Awang Ali Basah led the Malaysian parliamentary delegation at the 67th Commonwealth Parliamentary Conference in Sydney, Australia yesterday.

He was accompanied by speakers of state legislative assemblies, the Senate secretary, and secretaries of state legislative assemblies.

Today, the Malaysian delegation is scheduled to participate in the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association General Assembly, where representatives will discuss issues related to governance, constitutional amendments, association membership, and financial statements.

Additionally, a debate will be held on the theme ‘Votes vs Likes – The Role of Parliament in Strengthening Democratic Resilience in an Age of Fake News and Synthetic Media’.

“The participation of the Malaysian delegation in this prestigious conference reflects the nation’s commitment to strengthening diplomatic relations and supporting Commonwealth values such as democracy, human rights, and good governance,” the Corporate Communications Division of the Parliament of Malaysia said in a statement.

It said the 67th Commonwealth Parliamentary Conference serves as an important platform for leaders and parliamentarians from Commonwealth member countries to share best practices and discuss shared issues in efforts to reinforce Commonwealth values and principles.

Governor of New South Wales Margaret Beazley, who also serves as vice patron of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association, officiated at the opening ceremony yesterday.

The Malaysian delegation has attended several meetings, including those on Commonwealth Women Parliamentarians (CWP), Commonwealth Parliamentarians with Disabilities (CPwD), involving parliamentarians with disabilities, and the Society of Clerks at the Table (SoCATT), involving parliamentary secretaries.

The delegation has also participated in workshops addressing current issues, including women’s involvement in politics, artificial intelligence, and best practices for strengthening parliamentary institutions.
