KUCHING (Dec 20): Express bus operators in Sarawak are now required to store passengers’ belongings and goods in designated cargo compartments, rather than in passenger areas.

In a statement on Friday, Commercial Vehicle Licensing Board (CVLB) Sarawak chairman Michael Kong said the new policy follows public complaints about items being placed in passenger cabins, which pose serious safety risks, especially during emergencies.

“This policy ensures that goods are only stored in designated cargo compartments, not within the passenger cabin,” he said, noting the measure was discussed at a recent coordination meeting with all express bus operators and the Ministry of Transport Sarawak (MOTS).

Kong added that the meeting also aimed to align on other industry policies, including proper route planning, adherence to approved schedules, and standardisation of services.

“Compliance with these guidelines will help deliver a more reliable, orderly and dependable public transport service, while boosting passenger confidence in express bus service across Sarawak,” he said.

He emphasised that CVLB Sarawak prioritises public safety and will continue collaborating with MOTS and industry players to balance the sustainability of commercial vehicle operations with passenger safety, comfort and well-being.
