Sarawak pushes for EV adoption with energy transition, sustainability policies
by Aliah Abdullah · Borneo Post OnlineKUCHING (Nov 27): Sarawak has introduced two major initiatives — Sarawak Energy Transition Policy (SET-P) and Sarawak Sustainability Blueprint (SSB) — to promote low- carbon mobility across the state.
State Deputy Minister for Energy and Environmental Sustainability Datuk Dr Hazland Abang Hipni said the policies are aimed at supporting the development of electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure, a hydrogen production plant, and a hydrogen refuelling station, while encouraging wider adoption of low-carbon vehicles.
“At the national level, the usage of electric vehicles including Hydrogen Fuel-Cell Electric Vehicles (FCEVs) and hybrid technologies, aligns with the National Automobile Policy,” he said during the State Legislative Assembly (DUN) sitting.
Dr Hazland added that the policy currently grants an exemption from excise duty for the importation of these fully assembled Complete Build Up (CBU) vehicles, but this exemption is set to expire at the end of 2025 as the federal government seeks to promote local EV assembly.
He noted that EV owners have been exempted from paying road tax since 2022 and will continue this privilege until Dec 31, 2025.
“From Jan 1, 2026, a new road tax structure will apply, based on the power output of EVs, which is estimated to be 85 per cent lower compared to petrol-powered vehicles,” he said.
Dr Hazland emphasised that these initiatives reflect the state government’s commitment to supporting sustainable transport solutions and advancing Sarawak’s transition to a low-carbon future.
