KANOWIT (Dec 24): The long-awaited Kanowit–Sedaya ferry service officially began operations on Tuesday, providing a faster and more convenient water transport link between Kanowit and Ngemah.

According to a media statement from the Sarawak Public Works Department (JKR), the ferry service is part of ongoing efforts to improve rural connectivity and support socio-economic development in surrounding areas.

The inaugural ceremony and operational launch were officiated by Machan assemblyman Allan Siden Gramong and Ngemah assemblyman Anyi Jana through a ribbon-cutting ceremony.

JKR Sarawak said a project briefing was held earlier, delivered by Sibu Division JKR engineer Ir Chieng Siong Ming, outlining the scope of works carried out for the ferry project and the construction of the Sedaya ferry ramp.

“The works include the construction of the Sedaya–Kanowit ferry, setting gantry height limits, road resurfacing works, as well as the construction of a waiting shelter, security guard post and toilet facilities,” the statement said.

The ferry service is expected to benefit rural communities, particularly residents from Nanga Tada, Mapai, Bejait, Sedaya and Bawan.

Previously, residents travelling from the Nibong–Tada Road in Ngemah to Kanowit town had to use longer land routes via the Kanowit–Julau–Durin Road or the Penyulau–Lukut Road.

With the ferry now in operation, travel time to Kanowit town has been significantly reduced, making it easier for residents to access essential services such as Kanowit Hospital and the Kanowit District Office.

Located directly opposite Kanowit town, the Sedaya ferry terminal also allows daily travel without the need to cross the Durin Bridge.

Overall, the Kanowit–Sedaya ferry service is expected to strengthen connectivity between Kanowit and Ngemah and bring positive economic impact to nearby areas, including Song and Kapit.
