‘A Christmas In Borneo’ lights up Sibu with festive cheer, unity
by Peter Boon · Borneo Post OnlineSIBU (Dec 12): The lighting of “A Christmas In Borneo” at the iconic Dataran Tun Tuanku Bujang Phase 1 has brought festive cheer and a message of unity to Sibu’s town centre.
Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) chairman Clarence Ting reflected on last year’s Christmas celebration themed “Disneyland”, which had brought joy and wonder to many.
“And now, one year later, we find ourselves back home, right here in beautiful Borneo. There is something truly meaningful about returning home — to our cultures, our traditions, and our unique identity. That is the heart of ‘A Christmas In Borneo’,” said Ting in a speech read by Councillor Michelle Law during the lighting up of “A Christmas In Borneo”.
He added that the event embodies the Social and Community Development Committee’s mission: bringing people together, strengthening community spirit, and creating inclusive celebrations that support the wellbeing of all residents.
“Through shared joy and festive cheer, we make Sibu vibrant and connected. Here in Sibu, our town is special by its rich cultural heritage, life along the Rejang River, hardworking spirit, and most importantly – the warmth, friendliness, and sincerity of our people,” he said.
Event organising chairman Councillor Simon Wee said the celebration went beyond switching on lights to “switching on the spirit of unity, joy, and community which Borneo is famous for.”
“Though we do not experience the winter snow, we have something ever more magical.
“We have a community that stands together, celebrates together and laughs together,” he said.
The Blessing Prayer for “A Christmas In Borneo” was delivered by Rev Dr Lau Hui Ming, president of the Sarawak Chinese Annual Conference (SCAC), Methodist Church.
Adding to the festive atmosphere were six towering, brightly-lit Christmas trees, decorated in colourful lights.
Law, Wee, other councillors, and SMC staff later conducted a Christmas Tree Decoration Walkabout.
The lighting-up ceremony drew residents from all walks of life, many taking photos near the Christmas arch and trees.
Also present was Sibu Rural District Council (SRDC) secretary Ng Siang Wei.
