Cops arrest 13, seize drugs valued at RM3,488 in Miri

MIRI (Oct 27): Police have arrested 13 men and seized drugs estimated to be worth RM3,488.10 in two raids carried out in Sungai Baong, here on Oct 25.

Miri district police chief ACP Alexson Naga Chabu, in a press statement today, said the suspects, comprising 11 locals and two foreigners aged between 27 and 56, were detained by a team from the Sarawak Narcotics Criminal Investigation Division (NCID).

“In the first raid which was carried out in a room, the team found and seized items believed to be syabu, weighing 30g, with an estimated value of RM3,300,” he said, adding that all the suspects would be brought to court to be remanded.

Alexson said the case is being investigated under Section 39A(2) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which provides for life imprisonment or jail not less than five years, and not less than 10 strokes of the cane, upon conviction.

In the second raid, he said while inspecting the perimeter of a room, police found and seized items believed to be syabu weighing 1.71g, with an estimated value of RM188.10.

“The case is being investigated under Section 12(2) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which provides for a fine of not more than RM1,000 or jail for a period of not more than five years, or both, upon conviction.”

Alexson said the suspects have been brought to the court to be remanded to facilitate the investigation.

Meanwhile, the police are advising members of the public with information about drug abuse activities to report it immediately to the nearest police station, so that they can be curbed and eradicated.
