DAPSY S’wak chides govt for failure to resolve issues with yellow LPG cylinders
by Philip Kiew · Borneo Post OnlineMIRI (Nov 20): Democratic Action Party Socialist Youth (Dapsy) Sarawak has criticised the state government and its lawmakers for failing to address the persistent problem of exchanging yellow liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) cylinders.
DAPSY Sarawak chief Peter Hee said nearly a year after Petroleum Sarawak Berhad (Petros) took over LPG cylinder distribution, members of the public are still being forced to purchase costly new red cylinders, putting an unacceptable inconvenience and financial burden on struggling families.
“It is a serious neglect of the public’s basic needs. The replacement initiative began in December last year, nearly a year has passed without a resolution.
“This prolonged inaction has caused significant inconvenience to both distributors and consumers, leaving many scrambling to find ways or locations to replace their gas cylinders,” he claimed in a statement.
According to him, contacting the Petros customer service hotline to arrange for replacements as suggested by the government has proven to be ineffective as many residents reported their problems remain unresolved, forcing them to seek alternative solutions.
Hee claimed local distributors are also frustrated with the situation and some have been instructed to stop accepting yellow cylinders while others are requiring users to register with long waiting times.
“Such delays in supply have placed additional financial burdens on already struggling families as many are forced to purchase new gas cylinders or switch to electric appliances, leading to increased expenses,” he claimed.
He also criticised Gabungan Party Sarawak (GPS) legislators for remaining silent on the issue during the current State Legislative Assembly (DUN) Sitting.
He called for immediate action as upcoming festive seasons would likely see a spike in demand for LPG cylinders.
“Merely boasting about high government revenue while leaving citizens in distress is unacceptable,” he added.
