KUCHING (Dec 17): The Sarawak General Operations Force (GOF) recorded seizures amounting to RM9.9 million from 15 operations conducted statewide between Nov 26 and Dec 16, its commander SAC Lim Bak Phai said.

He said items seized during the operations included illicit cigarettes and alcoholic beverages, subsidised controlled goods, frozen food products, and fireworks.

“These integrated operations involved inspections of premises, vehicles and border areas, which in turn led to the arrest of dozens of individuals and the seizure of large quantities of goods,” he said in a statement.

Lim said among the biggest successes recorded was an operation around Miri that led to the seizure of more than 4,900 cartons of cigarettes and 12,500 litres of alcoholic beverages worth more than RM2.5 million, as well as the arrest of six local individuals.

The GOF also foiled attempts to smuggle controlled goods worth hundreds of thousands of ringgit, including red onions, sugar, cooking oil, and subsidised diesel, in Lundu, Siburan, Lubok Antu, Bau and other districts.

He said operations in the Sri Aman border area also uncovered packages of alcoholic beverages believed to have been attempted to be smuggled into the area.

“Several other raids involved the discovery of frozen products without permits as well as fireworks stored illegally,” he added.

He said the cases have been handed over to the relevant agencies for further investigation in accordance with legal provisions.

Lim also informed that from Jan 1 to Dec 16 this year, the Sarawak GOF recorded total seizures valued at RM404.9 million involving 623 cases, with 741 individuals arrested and 362 vehicles of various types seized.

“The Sarawak GOF will continue to intensify operations to combat smuggling activities and cross-border crimes for the safety and interests of the country,” he said.
