Woman pleads guilty to buying illegal lottery, fined RM1,500

KUCHING (Dec 22): A 24-year-old woman was fined RM1,500 in default one month in prison after pleading guilty in the Magistrates’ Court here to purchasing an illegal lottery ticket.

She made the plea after the charge under Section 9(1) of the Common Gaming Houses Act 1953 was read to her before Magistrate Nur Syaheeqa Nazwa Radzali.

The Section provides for a fine not exceeding RM5,000 or imprisonment for up to six months, or both, upon conviction.

The offence was committed at an eatery in Matang Jaya, Jalan Matang here at about 6.58pm on Jan 3, 2024.

Based on the facts of the case, police conducted an operation and found the accused seated in the eatery using a mobile phone.

Suspecting her of involvement in unlicensed public lottery activities, police seized the device along with a piece of paper containing lottery numbers and RM116 in cash.

Prosecuting was deputy public prosecutor Chuah Kai Sheng, while the accused was unrepresented.
