Christmas spirit shines on Kuching’s beloved White Cat statue
by Aileen Yap · Borneo Post OnlineKUCHING (Dec 12): As the Christmas season approaches, Kuching’s iconic White Cat statue has once again received a festive makeover, adding to the city’s vibrant holiday celebrations.
The Kuching South City Council (MBKS) decorated the beloved landmark with bright Christmas ornaments, including a tree and Santa outfits.
A special lighting-up ceremony was held on Friday night, officiated by Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian, Kuching South Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng, Deputy Mayor Dato Zaiedi Suhaili, and several councillors.
Speaking to reporters, Dr Sim highlighted the significance of dressing up the cat statue for various festivals, calling it a symbol of unity.
“We are at the symbol of Kuching, which is the white cat statues. On every occasion, we come together to celebrate by changing costumes.
“This reflects the spirit of Sarawak, where we celebrate each other’s festivals,” he said.
Dr Sim also reminded the public to cherish and uphold this unity, cautioning that it could easily be disrupted if not nurtured.
He reflected on the broader significance of peace and joy during the festive season, noting that many parts of the world currently face hostilities and suffering.
“In this season of travelling and spending time with family and friends, we should reflect, share joy, and consider our role in Sarawak’s nation-building,” he said.
Mayor Wee highlighted the symbolism of the statue’s lights as a beacon against darkness.
“When we talk about lighting, we are talking about lights against darkness. Christmas is a time for joy, peace, and harmony.
“Let’s continue that spirit in Sarawak, protect our harmony, and be proud Sarawakians,” he said.
