KUCHING (Dec 18): The appointment of Mas Gading MP Mordi Bimol as a federal Deputy Minister has been hailed as a historic milestone for Democratic Action Party (DAP) Sarawak.

Sarawak DAP chairman Chong Chieng Jen said Mordi’s appointment as Deputy Minister of Youth and Sports clearly demonstrates the party’s multiracial character.

“He is the first Dayak Member of Parliament to be appointed as Deputy Minister. This shows clearly that DAP Sarawak is a party for all races and puts to rest the malicious and baseless accusation that DAP Sarawak is solely a Chinese party,” said Chong in a statement.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced the appointment as part of a Cabinet reshuffle on Tuesday.

Chong detailed Mordi’s political journey, noting he joined DAP Sarawak in 2011 at age 26.

Despite facing defeats in the 2013 general election and the 2016 Sarawak state election, he remained with the party.

“He continued to serve in his area and was finally rewarded by the people in his first electoral win in Mas Gading in the 2018 General Elections,” said Chong.

“With his hard work and persistence, he successfully defended his seat with a bigger majority in the 2022 General Election.”

Chong also revealed that Mordi had resisted numerous attempts to lure him away from the party, steadfastly holding to its principles throughout the ups and downs of his political career.

“He has earned the appointment on his merits, with the recommendation and strong support of DAP Sarawak. With this important appointment, comes great responsibilities,” said Chong, who is also the Stampin MP and Padungan assemblyman.

“We wish him all the best. DAP Sarawak has every confidence that he will perform well as the Deputy Minister of Youth and Sports, helping to develop Sarawak’s youth and elevate the state’s sporting standards.”
