BINTULU (March 23): Eight container-type rooms of a lodging house at Bakun Dam were completely destroyed in a fire early Monday morning.

The Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) operations centre said in a statement that they received a distress call at 4.02am and deployed six firefighters from the Belaga fire station to the location, about 70km away.

“The fire involved eight container-type rooms which were completely destroyed. The affected units were part of 24 rooms, each measuring 10 feet by 16 feet, used as temporary accommodation by a construction contractor,” the statement said.

Firefighters carried out defensive firefighting operations to control and prevent the fire from spreading to nearby rooms.

The Bakun Emergency Rescue Team (ERT) also conducted initial firefighting efforts before the arrival of firefighters at the scene.

“No injuries were reported in the incident,” Bomba said, adding that the fire was brought under control at 5.30am.

After ensuring the situation was safe and the fire had been fully extinguished, firefighters ended the operation at 8.25am.
