Unimas pivotal in Sarawak’s journey toward educational autonomy, says Deputy Premier
by Matthew Umpang · Borneo Post OnlineKOTA SAMARAHAN (Nov 6): Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas) can play a pivotal role in providing competitive study programmes to complement Sarawak’s journey towards reclaiming its full education autonomy, said Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas.
The Deputy Premier said state government sees educational autonomy as an important step to provide the best education to ‘Anak Sarawak’.
“With full autonomy in the field of education, we can design programmes that are more relevant to local needs, produce first-class human capital, and strengthen the achievements of our students at all levels.
“Unimas plays a critical role and I greatly appreciate the university’s commitment in providing these competitive study programmes,” said Uggah, who is also the Pro-Chancellor of Unimas in his speech at the third session of the university’s 28th convocation ceremony here yesterday.
He also emphasised on the synergy between the state government and Unimas in the field of agricultural and nutrition research, which he deemed as crucial to address the state’s food security and sustainability.
“I am confident that with this integrated approach, we can achieve better food security, while also supporting the well-being of the people of Sarawak,” he said.
The state government, he added, has also foreseen the potential of the digital economy as a catalyst to attract more job opportunities in the technology and creative sectors.
“Unimas is therefore expected to continue to be a driver in digital research, improve people’s digital literacy, as well as produce highly capable graduates in the technology sector,” he emphasised.
