CBT: Ex-postal clerk in Kuching gets 22 years, 24 strokes for illegal ASB withdrawals
by Hafizah Abdul Hamid · Borneo Post OnlineKUCHING (Dec 17): A former post office clerk was sentenced by the Sessions Court here to a total of 22 years’ imprisonment and 24 strokes of the cane after he pleaded guilty to 52 counts of criminal breach of trust (CBT) involving unauthorised Amanah Saham Bumiputera (ASB) withdrawals.
Judge Iris Awen Jon imposed the sentence on Amirudin Hasra Hassan, 35, after considering all aspects of the case, including the seriousness of the offences and public interest.
In total, Amirudin is facing 199 charges under Section 408 of the Penal Code, including the 52 he pleaded guilty to.
He has already pleaded guilty to 48 of those charges, with Sessions Court judge Noorhisham Mohd Jaafar fixing Jan 22, 2026 for sentencing.
The accused has claimed trial to the remaining 99 CBT charges, with 51 heard before Sessions Court judge Musli Ab Hamid and another 48 before Sessions Court judge Jason Juga.
Musli set Jan 22, 2026 for case management, while Jason fixed Jan 26, 2026.
According to the facts of the case, the Lundu Post Office conducted a review of withdrawal transaction documents from January 2024 to January 2025 and discovered several suspicious transactions.
Initial checks revealed withdrawals ranging from RM500 to RM5,000 per transaction were made by the accused, who was then working as a counter staff, involving ASB accounts belonging to 12 victims aged from 50 to over 80 years.
A review of closed-circuit television footage showed Amirudin had conducted the transactions without the presence of the investors.
An audit report showed that a total of 199 unauthorised withdrawals were carried out involving an overall sum of RM654,300, with the accused using his own teller ID to access the victims’ accounts.
The prosecution was conducted separately by deputy public prosecutors Mohamad Aiman Mutallib Mohamad Shariff, Ruvinasini Pandian, Adriana Maisarah Mohd Farid and Asmawi Nur Haqim Mokhtar, while the accused was unrepresented.
