by peter boon · Borneo Post OnlineSIBU (Jan 13): The flood situation here is still under control, despite the water level showing a rising trend, said Sibu Resident Abang Mohamad Porkan Abang Budiman.
The Sibu Divisional Disaster Management Committee chairman said no temporary evacuation centres (PPS) have been opened yet.
“The Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba), Civil Defence Force (APM), police and army (ATM) are doing round-the-clock monitoring at all prone areas,” he told The Borneo Post today when asked on the flood situation here.
Elsewhere in Kanowit, Abang Mohamad said one PPS at Nanga Ngungun was opened last night to house 18 people from various households.
An observation at Jalan Khoo Peng Loong this morning found that the flood has receded, although the water level is still high
Meanwhile, when contacted last night on the probable causes of the flooding, Department of Irrigation and Drainage (DID) Sibu divisional engineer, Rudi Abang Zamhari, explained that high tide coincided with heavy rainfall in Sibu and the upper catchment of the Rajang River.
