KUCHING (Dec 31): A flash flood struck Desa Wira, Batu Kawa in the early hours today, leaving an elderly man stranded in knee-deep water.

The Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) said it received an emergency call at 5.08am and deployed a team from the Batu Lintang Fire Station to the affected area.

“Upon arrival, fire personnel found an elderly male victim still inside his house,” a Bomba spokesperson said on Wednesday.

“Rescue officers attempted to carry out an evacuation, but the victim informed them that he was not ready to be relocated at the time.”

The personnel subsequently provided safety advice and shared emergency contact numbers with the victim, advising him to immediately contact authorities should the situation worsen.

Several temporary relief centres (PPS) have been opened in the area following the flash flood.

Separately, the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) has issued a continuous rain warning, with heavy rain expected in Kuching, Serian and Samarahan until Thursday, Jan 1, 2026.

A continuous rain alert has also been issued for parts of Serian, Sri Aman and Betong over the same period.

Monitoring operations are ongoing in areas still inundated by floodwaters, and updates will be provided as the situation develops.
