MTPN, KPDN Sarawak collaborate to boost consumer education, anti-scam efforts
by Rachel Purai Lihan · Borneo Post OnlineKUCHING (April 9): The National Consumer Action Council (MTPN) recently paid a courtesy call to the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (KPDN) Sarawak office to strengthen collaboration on consumer protection and awareness initiatives.
The MTPN delegation, led by its national president Datuk Dr Kevy KV Yeo, was received by KPDN Sarawak director Matthew Dominic Barin.
Also present were MTPN deputy national president Prof Dr Jericho Tang and MTPN Sarawak chairman Lucas Lau.
According to MTPN, the visit aimed to enhance strategic cooperation in advancing consumer protection, digital awareness and community engagement efforts.
“MTPN remains committed to working closely with KPDN to enhance consumer protection efforts, particularly in ensuring the public has access to accurate and timely information on their rights,” said Yeo in a statement following the visit.
During the meeting, MTPN provided updates on its role within the Gerakan Pengguna Negara (GPN) in Sarawak, including organisational restructuring of its Kuching branch and recent leadership appointments.
Yeo said both parties emphasised the importance of educating consumers on price comparison practices and personal data protection.
“With the rising threat of online scams, it is crucial that consumers are equipped with the knowledge to safeguard their personal information and make informed purchasing decisions,” he said.
He added that an anti-scam initiative under the ‘Go Digital’ programme had been introduced, featuring the use of QR codes and barcode scanning to enable consumers to access official KPDN platforms directly for information and verification.
