KUCHING (Nov 17): Forty-five underprivileged families in Bintawa here received food aid during a ‘Prihatin’ event run by the Pending Division of Sarawak United National Youth Organisation (Saberkas) here yesterday.

This initiative was meant to reach out to the B40 (low-income) groups, disabled individuals, the senior citizens, families dealing with severe illnesses and other vulnerable groups, particularly cancer patients, said the movement in a statement.

Each food pack contained rice, sugar, salt, cooking oil, soy sauce, eggs, noodles, biscuits, canned foods and milk.

Saberkas Pending chairman Jack Chang, in the statement, said it was their responsibility to help the underprivileged groups in the community.

“Through charity events like this, we not only assist families in overcoming immediate hardships but also hope to inspire greater care within our communities,” he said.

“Only through consistent engagement and assistance can we ensure more families feel supported.”

Chang, on behalf of his division, also pledged to continue collaborating with kind-hearted individuals towards establishing a more harmonious society in the city.

Guest-of-honour Datuk Yii Ming Tang and his community team were actively involved in preparing for this meaningful cause.

Yii highlighted the increasing socioeconomic challenges faced by some locals, especially the low-income groups.

He commended the Saberkas Pending Division and its volunteers for exemplifying collective responsibility and community strength.

“Through joint efforts by the government and community organisations, we can help these families overcome difficulties. I hope more businesses and individuals will participate in such charitable activities to spread positive energy in our community,” he said.

Yii also called for increased social welfare assistance by government bodies and stronger collaboration with community organisations to create a more inclusive society.

In addition, he appealed to capable enterprises, organisations and individuals to focus on supporting vulnerable groups, providing practical aid and care.
