Police confirm viral video shows actual arrests of theft suspects in Telipok
by Elton Gomes · Borneo Post OnlineKOTA KINABALU (Dec 19): Police have confirmed that a viral video showing personnel arresting two men was an actual incident that occurred in Telipok on Dec 12.
A video of the arrests had gone viral on social media.
Kota Kinabalu police chief ACP Kasim Muda said two men, aged 28 and 22, were arrested on suspicion of theft.
Prior to their arrests, both suspects allegedly stole the sling bag of a 56-year-old woman, which contained her identification documents, bankcard, mobile phone, cash and a car key, with losses estimated at RM1,500.
“Police investigation revealed that the vehicle used by the suspects was a rental car equipped with a GPS tracking system.
“Police tracked the vehicle which led to a car chase before the vehicle skidded to the side of the road. The arrests were made on the same day at 4.20pm in Telipok,” Kasim said in a statement.
He said police recovered stolen items belonging to the victim, while urine tests found both suspects to be positive for drugs.
“This case is being investigated under Section 379 of the Penal Code and the suspects were also detained to assist with further investigations related to other cases.
“A remand application will be made under Section 117 of the Criminal Procedure Code, in addition to recording the statements of witnesses and follow-up investigation actions,” he said.
Kasim advised the public to always be vigilant about personal safety and property.
He also advised the public to immediately channel information to the police to assist with any criminal cases.
