Carver Jones Market Opens to Serve Residents of Birmingham’s District 6

Birmingham City Councilor Crystal N. Smitherman of District 6 joined hundreds of residents on Wednesday morning to celebrate the opening of the new Carver Jones Market in the Heritage Park Towne Center, located at 873 Dennison Avenue SW.

With a commitment to sourcing Alabama-grown produce, the new store could help fill a major need in the city. Roughly 70 percent of Birmingham residents live in a USDA-designated food desert.

Councilor Smitherman, whose family has lived down the street from this shopping center for decades, said lack of access to healthy food is the number one issue for her constituents.

“So many families living in this area have resorted to getting their groceries from convenience stores or places like that because there hasn’t been another option,” Councilor Smitherman said. “This store is also going to bring jobs to the area, so it’s a win-win for everyone involved. The developers answered a lot of the questions we had, and I’d like to thank them for their commitment to work with local farmers to source their produce and keep these dollars in our community.”
