Chandranath Rath shot dead: Chandranath Rath, the personal aide to BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari, was murdered during an ambush-style assassination last night. This shocking attack has come two days after the BJP's unprecedented victory in the West Bengal Assembly elections held in April 2026.

The hit: On a public street

This incident took place Wednesday night in Madhyamgram, North 24 Parganas, when Rath, the Executive Assistant of Adhikari, was attacked by unknown miscreants on a public street.

According to witness testimonies and preliminary reports, it appears to be a well-thought-out hit job:

• The assault: Three bullets were fired in close proximity to the victim.
• The casualties: Rath was wounded in the head, chest, and leg by the gunfire.
• The fleeing: After shooting, the attackers escaped quickly into the dark of the night.

Rath was taken to a nearby private clinic in critical condition, where he died on the spot.

A political crisis emerges: The BJP accuses the TMC

This murder has sparked intense debate among political leaders. The BJP claims that the murder is a "premeditated political assassination" against the party members to instill fear within them.

"We have been preaching peace, but TMC has made the biggest blunder," stated newly elected BJP MLA Tarunjyoti Tewari, directly linking the ruling party to the unrest.

However, while there has been a lot of censure for the TMC government from the opposition, BJP believes that it was an intentional act to create unrest due to the change in the political mandate of the state.

Manhunt launched, security tightened

With the recent incident, a large contingent of policemen has been mobilized in Madhyamgram to guard against any retaliation from either communal groups or politically motivated individuals. High-ranking police officials from West Bengal along with investigating teams have arrived on the spot to conduct the investigations.

Gathering evidence: Currently forensic experts are working on the crime spot, while authorities are going through CCTV footage available from the locality for tracking the exit point of the perpetrators.

Security measures: In addition, authorities have beefed up the security around the residences of political personalities, including Suvendu Adhikari, in anticipation of more violence.

Investigation status

As per Thursday morning's report, the motive of the crime is still being investigated, and as yet no arrests have been made. It is still unclear whether the attack was planned by miscreants from the locality or from a specialised contract group.
