Terence Winter, Dan Farah Team to Develop Series Based on UAP Memoir ‘Out of the Shadows’

Terence Winter and Dan Farah are partnering for a series take on the memoir of former U.S. Intelligence official Jay Stratton titled “Out of the Shadows,” Variety has learned.

In the memoir, which will be published by HarperCollins imprint William Morrow on Oct. 13, Stratton delves deep into his experiences investigating unidentified anomalous phenomena (UAP) and non-human intelligent life. Winter will executive produce via Cold Front Productions, with Farah executive producing under his Farah Films banner.

Stratton was previously the Chief of Air & Space Warfare in the Defense Warning Office of the Defense Intelligence Agency. After seeing evidence of a UAP over a nuclear missle site, he cofounded the Advanced Aerospace Weapon System Applications Program (AAWSAP), the first official U.S. Government program to investigate UAP since 1969. He then created and led the Unidentified Aerial Phenomena Task Force (UAPTF), the first whole-of-government investigation of UAP. He claims to have discovered an 80-year cover up of the existence of non-human intelligent life.

“It’s time for the world to learn the truth,” Stratton said. “There is far too much at stake. UAP activity over our nation’s sensitive military and nuclear sites is an ongoing issue.”

As Stratton investigated UAP and non-human intelligent life, he says that he, his wife, and children experienced unexplained encounters.

“In the early days of my investigation into UAP and non-human intelligent life, my work was so classified I couldn’t even tell my wife and kids that I had learned we are not alone in the universe or about any of the paradigm shift information I was learning,” he said. “I had to live a double life, where the front door to my house served as a boundary between two distinct identities… but that all changed when we started having UAP activity and encounters with non-human intelligent life at our house and my wife and kids saw it with their own eyes. In one sense, I felt horrible that my work had followed me home and crossed that boundary. But in another unexpected way, it was a relief because now my family knew what I was dealing with and we could navigate it together, as a family. While what we went through could have torn us apart, it actually brought us closer together. We were an ordinary family dealing with extraordinary circumstances.”

News of the series comes as President Donald Trump’s administration as released vast amounts of declassified evidence of UAP. Stratton has worked with the White House in those disclosures, as well as with the Director of National Intelligence and the Department of War.

“For all of human history, mankind has wondered whether we are the only intelligent life in the universe. Jay Stratton’s shocking true story answers that question and more as it delves into the world of the U.S. Government’s investigation of UAP and non-human intelligent life,” Winter said. “It’s a riveting journey into a world the public knows little about. Jay is the key-man in the U.S. Government’s modern-day investigation of UAP. While his decades of work has been in the shadows, it has changed the course of history and I couldn’t be more excited to bring his story to the screen.”

Winter was a writer and executive producer on the seminal HBO series “The Sopranos.” He won two Emmy Awards for best writing for a drama series for his work on the show. He then went on to create the critically-acclaimed HBO period gangster drama “Boardwalk Empire,” which aired for five seasons. He is also an executive producer and head writer on the Paramount+ mob drama “Tulsa King” starring Sylvester Stallone. In film, Winter received an Academy Award nomination for best adapted screenplay for “The Wolf of Wall Street.”

He is repped by CAA.

“’Out of the Shadows’ has the propulsive storytelling of a high-stakes political thriller,” Farah said. “It brings you behind the scenes of the U.S. Government’s investigation of the biggest mystery of all time. At the center of the story is the deeply personal, harrowing toll Jay’s pursuit of the truth had on him and his family.” Farah noted, “Adding to the compelling and unique complexity of Stratton’s story is how intertwined his family life and work life became. We intend to fully explore that in our show.”

Farah has previously produced films like the UFO documentaries “The Age of Disclosure” (which he also directed) and “The Phenomenon.” He was also a producer on Steven Spielberg’s “Ready Player One” and the TV series “The Shannara Chronicles.”
