“More expensive than travelling abroad” – MP Urges Govt to Resolve High Flight Ticket Prices to Sabah

Politicians are once again highlighting the issue of expensive flight ticket prices from Peninsular Malaysia and Sabah and Sarawak have not been resolved.

In yesterday’s session at Dewan Rakyat, Kinabatangan MP Datuk Seri Bung Moktar Radin claimed that based on this week alone, the price of a one-way economy class ticket to Sabah is RM1,700, which is more expensive than travelling abroad.

However, he did not mention which airline was charging the expensive prices.

“If (you’re) going to Singapore (or to) the Philippines, it’s only RM700, to Indonesia is RM600 but to Sabah, it’s RM1,700. (That’s) really bad. I ask that the Minister of Transport look into this matter because it burdens the people of Sabah, especially those who commute (to Peninsular Malaysia) for business and so on,” he said.

This is not the first time that the high prices of domestic flights between Peninsular Malaysia and Sabah & Sarawak have been brought up to urge the government to take measures to ensure that this does not burden the Malaysian people.

According to a report by Berita Harian, Minister of Transport Anthony Loke had previously announced 2 initiatives to help with purchasing flight tickets, namely a subsidy for students of higher learning institutions and maintaining the RM599 ceiling price for flight tickets between Peninsular Malaysia and Sabah & Sarawak during festive seasons.
