by · WORLD OF BUZZ

The Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (JAKIM) is urging the general public to prioritise peace over irresponsible behaviour in an effort to maintain national harmony.

Taking to its official Facebook page, it highlighted how acts of insult and provocation can lead to detrimental effects within the community.

JAKIM wrote:

“Malaysia is built on the values of respect and unity. Any act that is insulting or provocative is not a small matter, but can even affect the harmony, security and stability of the country.”

Where this started

This statement follows an incident where a Malaysian student posted an image on social media of himself stepping on a Quran, accompanied by offensive comments regarding the Prophet Muhammad. The post triggered significant backlash online.

In response, the student’s university launched an investigation into the matter, promising strict disciplinary action in accordance with student guidelines.

The student was subsequently arrested by the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) under Section 295 of the Penal Code for insulting a religion, as well as Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 for the improper use of network facilities.

“Malaysia is built on respect. Do not ruin harmony through irresponsible actions,” JAKIM added. “It (the act of insulting) touches peace; it touches unity. If you disagree, do not be insulting. If you are angry, do not go overboard. Be firm in principle, but be mature in your actions.”
