The former FAI football coach Eamonn Collins, who was arrested as part of an investigation into allegations of historical sexual abuse relating to the Ladies Football Association of Ireland three decades ago, has been released from detention.

He was arrested in Dublin yesterday morning by officers from the Garda National Protective Services Bureau.

The investigation commenced following a joint investigation by RTÉ and the Sunday Independent.

A number of women spoke out on the RTÉ Investigates programme "Girls in Green" which was broadcast two years ago and made allegations of inappropriate behaviour.

The allegations were also detailed in the Sunday Independent newspaper.

Gardaí said this morning that a man was released from detention late yesterday and that a file will be prepared for the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions.

In a statement, The Football Association of Ireland said it will continue to support An Garda Síochána in relation to its ongoing investigation.
