Social Democrats leader expecting second child in October

Social Democrats leader Holly Cairns has announced that she is pregnant with her second child.

The Cork South-West TD said, in a statement, that having a family should not be disqualifying for a political party leader.

Ms Cairns also said that she was grateful for the support of the parliamentary party and her constituents.

"I am so happy to announce that we are expecting our second child. Barry (Looney) and I are so excited and feel extremely lucky to be able to raise our family in West Cork."

Social Democrats deputy leader Cian O'Callaghan will step in as acting leader when Ms Cairns goes on maternity leave in October.

She has one daughter, born on the day of the last general election in November 2024, meaning that she was unable to cast a vote.
