It aims to ensure people who have been cancer free for five years are not unfairly penalised when applying for mortgages

The 'Right to Be Forgotten' legislation is today expected to pass all stages in the Seanad.

The legislation will place a statutory obligation on insurers to disregard certain cancer-related medical histories when assessing mortgage protection applications.

It replaces the existing voluntary code with a legal framework, giving eligible cancer survivors enforceable rights for the first time.

Government amendments reduced the required remission period from seven years to five years and increased the mortgage protection threshold from €500,000 to €650,000.

The legislation is expected to be passed by the Seanad later this afternoon before being sent to the President for formal signing.

Both Tánaiste Simon Harris and Minister of State Robert Troy will meet with the Irish Cancer Society and Cancer survivors at Government Buildings ahead of the Seanad debate.
