Trump visit 'time to reflect' on US links - Tánaiste

US President Donald Trump is expected to arrive in Ireland this morning for a two-day visit.

Air Force one is due to touch down at Dublin Airport, where President Trump will be welcomed by Tánaiste Simon Harris, who said the trip is an opportunity to mark and reflect on the deep links between Ireland and the United States.

Although this is not an official visit by the US President, he will first travel to Dublin's Phoenix Park for a number of political engagements.

High-level security is in place for his meeting with the Taoiseach Micheál Martin at Farmleigh House, and for a courtesy call on President Catherine Connolly at Áras an Uachtaráin.

Members of the Defence Forces will provide a guard of honour at both locations.

Hundreds of invited guests are also expected to gather at the US Ambassador’s Residence, where President Trump is expected to make a speech.

In the afternoon, Mr Trump is due to fly to Co Clare via Shannon Airport, to attend the Irish Open at Trump International Golf Links in Doonbeg.

It is expected that President Trump will present the winning player with the Irish Open trophy tomorrow evening before departing for the US.

The visit has been declared an extraordinary event, with garda leave cancelled and members of the force drafted in from outside the Clare division to police Mr Trump’s one-night stay.

Gardaí have said this weekend will be one of the biggest security operations they have ever put in place.

Protesters are expected in Doonbeg and at Shannon Airport with demonstrations planned to coincide with his arrival.

There will be disruption and traffic restrictions in Dublin and Clare during Mr Trump’s visit.
