Podcast: Political deadlock in Israel after election

· RTE.ie

Voters turned out in their highest numbers in decades in an election that was described as make-or-break for Israel, but provisional results suggested no clear path to power for either of the main parties.

The bloc of parties led by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu are predicted to take 53 of the 120 Knesset seats, short of the 61 needed for a majority.

The opposition bloc, led by Gadi Eisenkot is expected to take 48.

Arab parties are on track to record their best ever result, but both Mr Netanyahu and Mr Eisenkot ruled out working with them pre-election.

On this episode of Behind the Story, Alexander Cornwell, senior correspondent for Reuters, joined Paul Cunningham from Tel Aviv to explain the political fallout, what happens next and what it means for the wider Middle East region.
