A 36-year-old man has been charged with the murder of a man in Co Leitrim earlier this week.

Bartosz Cylka, with an address at Arderry in Corrawaleen, Co Leitrim, appeared before Judge Eiteáin Cunningham at a special sitting at Carrick-on-Shannon District Court.

He is charged with the murder of 41-year-old Janis Balodis.

Mr Balodis, who is originally from Latvia, was found unresponsive at a house in the Arderry area on Thursday.

He was treated at the scene by emergency services, but was pronounced dead a short time later.

Detective Sergeant Michael Kelly of Carrick-on-Shannon Garda Station gave evidence of arrest, charge and caution.

Mr Cylka was without legal representation, but was assisted by a Polish interpreter.

Judge Cunningham said that given the nature of the charge, the district court had no jurisdiction to hear an application for bail.

Mr Cylka was remanded in custody and is due to appear in court again on 16 June.
