Taoiseach to highlight global uncertainty in UN address

Taoiseach Micheál Martin is expected to focus on how this is a time of great uncertainty and the challenges facing the world during his address to the UN General Assembly later tonight.

His speech is scheduled for around 8 o'clock local time, 1am Irish time, on the final day of his trip.

It’s understood Mr Martin will speak about the need to make the multilateral system stronger and highlight conflicts around the world, including in the Middle East, Ukraine and Sudan.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas are also scheduled to speak today.

Mr Martin has attended a series of political and cultural events during his three-day visit to New York.

He has participated in a meeting about the Gaza peace plan with the leaders of the UK, France and Canada.

The Taoiseach also briefly met with US President Donald Trump on the sidelines of the UNGA, at the annual host country reception, on Tuesday.

Yesterday, he met with New York Governor Kathy Hochul and New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani at the New York Irish Centre in Queens.

The Minister for Foreign Affairs, Helen McEntee, who is also in New York for UNGA, is due to speak at the annual meeting of the Informal Ministerial Network for the International Criminal Court today.

She is also expected to deliver a national statement at a meeting of the Global Alliance for the Implementation of the Two State Solution and will deliver remarks at a high-level ministerial meeting on ensuring accountability for Ukraine.
