Late night hosts meltdown over President-elect Trump: Letters to the Editor — Nov. 14, 2024

The Issue: Television hosts melt down in the wake of President-elect Donald Trump’s victory.

Thank you for the article about late-night TV hosts and their reactions to President-elect Donald Trump’s victory (“Good grief! TV hosts get weepy,” Nov. 8).

I watched Jimmy Kimmel’s monologue the night after the election.

It was pathetic and I enjoyed every minute of it.

The late-night hosts — along with most news broadcasters at ABC, CBS and NBC — seemingly tried their best to get Vice President Kamala Harris elected.

It is now wonderful watching them all eat crow.

I miss the good old days when late-night hosts like Johnny Carson poked fun at all presidents and politicians.

These days, I just watch “Seinfeld” reruns.

Jimmy Kimmel teared up on his show the day after Trump won the election.

The reason, I believe, is because he realized all his bull against Trump not only had no effect on the election, but Trump did even better than expected.

Then he went on to list everything under the sun that will go wrong under Trump’s presidency.

How out of touch can you possibly get?

Old enough to remember Johnny Carson’s “ Tonight Show?”

Try and recall if he voted for Richard Nixon or Hubert Humphrey in 1968.

You probably can’t, because (to the best of my knowledge) Carson never revealed his personal choices. If, on the day after the election, he was saddened by the outcome, you never knew it.

The jokes kept coming.

Kimmel was the worst. After running through the list of people who would be harmed by the “Orange Hitler,” Kimmel couldn’t resist.

He had to express his sorrow for the people who voted for Trump, because they couldn’t possibly realize the terrible mistake they made.

His disgraceful comment just exemplified a level of arrogance that has afflicted so many of the political elite.

Stephen Colbert, Seth Meyers, Jimmy Kimmel and others have all freaked out over the Trump victory.

Kimmel even had a segment where he was packing to leave the country. Good riddance.

None of the current hosts follow the format of the late, great Johnny Carson when he was on the air.

Late-night shows should be about comedy and entertainment, not about constantly bashing a political leader.

The Issue: Gov. Gavin Newsom’s legislative power move to fight back against the incoming administration.

Some Democratic governors, like Gavin Newsom of California and Phil Murphy of New Jersey, claim that they are ready to fight Trump (“Gav: I’ll ‘Trump-proof’ Cali,” Nov. 8).

What sorry excuses they are for leaders.

Murphy acts like he is scared of his own shadow.

Newsom made such a mess of California that people are leaving the state in droves.

Gavin implies Californians need to be protected from the evils of the rest of Republican America, apparently.

If Gavin wants out so bad, perhaps he should build a border wall, practice a new language and sever all commerce with the rest of the United States.

Gavin Newsom should stop the divisive rhetoric and work on cleaning up California, like he did San Francisco.

It’s Newsom’s policies — like those of the Biden-Harris administration — that handed President-elect Trump a landslide victory last week.
