There’s only one responsible way to ‘end the Iran war,’ Chuck Schumer
· New York PostIncoming Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer vows to end the Iran war when Democrats take over Congress in January, but what then — are Dems OK with empowering Tehran?
As best we can tell, the Democratic Party has no strategy on Iran, nor on Ukraine: Different factions have very different ideas; all they really unite on is #Resist.
But we can’t think that many of them want Iran to take control of the Strait of Hormuz, let alone join the nuclear-weapons club — yet “end the war” seems to guarantee just that.
Indeed, it makes a negotiated end to the conflict look impossible: Why should Tehran retreat from its “give us everything” demands now that Democrats are determined to force a US retreat anyway?
All that seems irrelevant to Schumer, whose actual complaints Wednesday centered on President Donald Trump’s communications: “The American people don’t know what the heck we’re fighting for in Iran. He’s never made it clear, he changes his mind day-to-day and minute-to-minute,” Chuck fumed.
In fact, Trump has been clear from the start: It’s about stopping Iran from going nuclear.
Sure, he’s stepped on his own message with many of his other comments — claims about peace being nearly at hand, wild talk of ending Iranian civilization, and all too much else in between.
But after even Vice President J.D. Vance on Wednesday publicly blamed Tuesday’s GOP wipeout on the war, Trump still said, “If I had it to do again, I’d have to do it again, because long term, it’s the only answer. You can’t let Iran have a . . . nuclear weapon or everything that you see here someday might not exist.”
He’s never wavered from that, only given Vance and others who claimed that negotiations could settle the issue their chance to try — even though that diplomacy dragged out the war for most of the year, leaving oil and diesel prices painfully high.
That suggests only one possible course of action now: Finish the job, as best is possible.
However much the war harmed Republicans at the polls, that damage is done.
Average Americans have made their sacrifice, too, paying elevated energy bills.
You’ve got two months before Dems take over Congress, Mr. President: Don’t make those sacrifices be in vain.
