Lebanon’s proposal for a European mission to replace UNIFIL
L’Orient-Le Jour obtained the letter submitted by the Foreign Affairs Ministry, in which it sets out the reasons and grounds behind its request.
by Mounir RABIH · L'Orient TodayThe Foreign Affairs Ministry submitted a letter to Cabinet proposing that an item be placed on its agenda to discuss and decide on “the establishment of a civilian and military European mission in Lebanon.” This comes as European and Arab military officials held meetings and consultations in Paris to assess the Lebanese Army’s needs and discuss the looming end of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) mission.The Cabinet met at the Grand Serail under the chairmanship of Nawaf Salam, but did not decide on the proposal.L’Orient-Le Jour obtained a copy of the ministry’s letter, in which it proposed establishing a European civilian and military mission in Lebanon for three years.
